In March of 2008 the decision was made to take the Mass to the internet. By doing so Bishop Kinney and the Communications Office hopes to bring the good news of the Catholic Mass to many thousands of viewers. Currently the TV Mass is only aired via cable stations and local access channels around the Diocese of St. Cloud. This is a change from network TV. (Since 2004)
"The people want the Mass." said Amy Casperson, Assistant Director of the Communications Office, which produces the Mass. "I get calls all the time from people who say, where can I get the Mass?" Unfortunately, most of the Diocese cannot get the Mass in rural areas that don't have cable access. The internet access will allow another group of viewers to enjoy the Mass.
"We will be celebrating our 50th anniversary of this Diocesan TV Mass and could not be more excited about the growth possibilities via the internet." said Casperson. "There are countless volunteers who make it possible for the Mass to take place. It is truly guided by the holy spirit."
Each week volunteer choirs plan the music of the week and in some situations drive for hours to participate in this ministry. They bring a lector from their parish as well. Priests are assigned weekly to preside at the 52 Sunday Masses each year. We have a volunteer staff who provide excellent abilities in audio, video, and graphic production to make this Mass as professional as we can and still maintain reverence and commitment to the ministry for the homebound who view it weekly.
This ministry provides viewers with a Mass they might not otherwise be able to attend in their community. They are always so thankful for the service. For instance, when a member of a parish is homebound and will watch the Mass and be able to see members of their own community. It is the viewer donations that helps to keep the Mass up and going. We could not do any of this without the help of our volunteers and viewers. We are truly thankful for all who are involved.
We will continue to bring the Diocesan Mass to you weekly. Please watch for other announcements and messages from the Bishop and the Diocese of St. Cloud.
