6th Graders Give Reporting a Try at Lincoln Elementary School

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. - A group of five 6th graders at Lincoln Elementary School spent the last couple of weeks putting together the first news segment of the year.

"I'm so glad we got to be the first ones," said Abbie Massmann, a 6th grader at Lincoln Elementary.

The group went around the school and reported on everything from recycling to meeting new students and teachers.

"I was actually a reporter, and I told kids how to put the stuff in the bins and where to put it," explained Taylor Esbjornsson, another 6th grader.

Students learned how to take pictures, use a video camera and be in front of the camera.

"It's actually really fun talking in front of a camera," said Abbie.

6th grade teacher Jon Hennen was in charge of this newscast.  He says he had a great time working with the kids and teaching them about technology.

"They love it.  They have a blast.  We got to do some filming outside yesterday, and they get to be pulled out of class to do film.  Of course they love that.  They...take some ownership in it too," said Hennen.

He says one of the goals of the news program is to make the school feel more like a family community.
