Police in northern Minnesota listed and then relisted the "DWI chair" on eBay after the owner was arrested for driving it into a parked car last year. It sold Thursday for $10,099.99. Initially, Proctor Police had listed the chair on eBay under the La-Z-Boy name, but were later forced to relist it when representatives from the La-Z-Boy company said the chair was not an official La-Z-Boy chair. Initial bids for the infamous chair under the La-Z-Boy name reached upwards of $40,000. Proctor police Chief Walter Wobig didn't immediately know the winning bidder's name or hometown. He says international media attention helped fuel the bidding. The chair was built by Dennis LeRoy Anderson. He had pleaded guilty to driving the motorized chair with a blood-alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit. He says he expected the chair would fetch only $2,000 to $3,000. The recliner is powered by a lawnmower engine. It comes equipped with a stereo, cup holders and lights. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
