Benson Man Tasered, Recovering in Hospital after Allegedly Punching Officer

BENSON, Minn - According to the Benson police 21-year-old Michael Cox punched an officer who was investigating a call of a possible drug overdose at Cox's home in Benson Monday.

"He began to push the officer and one thing led to another. The confrontation eventually led to Cox striking the officer in the back of the head," said Sergeant Mike Jamor.

Jambor says the fight began inside of the home and continued in the front yard.

"The confrontation spilled out in front of the house and into the street. It continued until a Swift County Deputy got there," said Jambor.

According to Jambor the deputy warned Cox to stop resisting several times before deploying a Taser.

"He continued fighting, so at that point the deputy used a Taser," said Jambor.

Cox was taken to the Swift County Benson Hospital for his injuries. Injuries Jambor said Cox inflicted on himself.

"Prior to us getting there he had kicked a wall and fractured his ankle," said Jambor.

As for the use of the Taser, Jamber says it was justified.

"When he's pushing the officer it's definitely a time when you can use a Taser," said Jambor.

Jambor says Cox will face several charges including assault on an officer and making terroristic threats when he is released from the hospital.
