Long Lake Ice house Falls Through, Reminds Fishermen to Check Depth

BURNHAMVILLE TOWNSHIP, MN- Daniel Frueckte of Swanville got prepared for the fishing season. He picked his spot, drilled holes, and moved his ice house into position for the fishing ahead before leaving Long Lake Wed. Little did he know that the entire rear end of his ice house would be submerged by thursday morning.

"Come outside and watched him set it all up. He drilled all the holes, never had any problems. He didn't even fish, just took off after it was all set up and sometime during the day Wed. it fell through" Long Lake ice fisher Derek Rech said.

With the cold weather finally hitting with force as of late and ice covering lakes fishermen are quick to grab their gear and head to their favorite spot, but it's important to check the thickness of the ice before bringing out heavy gear and equipment this early in the season.

"Its always been one of the lakes that's one of the last to have ice around here" Rech explains about Long Lake. "It's really known for being deep I mean there's a sunken island right here and its three or four feet deep and where this house is it's probably thirty feet."

Fortunately no one was injured due to the incident and the next step is removing the house from the lake. The Todd County sheriffs Department says the total damage will run at roughly 15,000 dollars.
