Blizzard Hockey Helps Haiti

ALEXANDRIA, Minn.- On Jan. 30 the Alexandria Blizzard won't just be battling to gain some momentum in the NAHL Central Division against the Owatonna Express. They will be hitting the ice to help out with the disaster that occurred in Haiti.

"We are doing a fundraiser with a partnership with the American Red Cross, we are doing a night called Hockey for Haiti" Blizzard Business Manager Rick Lenarz explains.

"It's going to be a night where the proceeds from ticket sales go to help the Haiti relief effort. We're really excited about it and we just want to do something locally here to help the people that are struggling down there" Lenarz says.

Along with the proceeds from tickets going to help Haiti relief, the American Red Cross will be on hand at the rink to give out information, as well as take direct donations from checks or credit cards if fans would like to donate additional funds.

When you think of donating to help Haiti, an NAHL junior hockey team isn't the first organization you would expect to throw their hat in the ring to organize donations. But Lenarz says they're hoping to fill the rink with people and help out as much as they can at the local level.

"With this tragic event, we want to do whatever we can to support that. You don't think that a hockey team in Alexandria can contribute but this is a way where we can get our hands around this and help this cause."

The game is on Jan. 30 against the Owatonna Express at 7:00 in the Runestone Community Center.
