Popular Landmark

A popular landmark at a Spicer beach has become too much of a liability and is being torn down.

The dive tower at
Saulbury Beach has had thousands of kids on it over several decades.

Now the
County Administrator has had to break the news that the dive tower won’t be going back up this summer.

Commissioners described it as “too rusty, too corroded and too dangerous.”

The tower was originally placed on
Saulbury Beach in the 1960's, then repaired and re-done in the 80's.

The city of
Spicer asked the County Board of Commissioners to reconsider the decision not resurrect the dive tower, but commissioners stand by their decision, saying the ladder is twisted, boards are broken and rotting and the liability is just too high.

Kandiyohi County, like so many other counties are facing cuts in their budgets, so even if the tower could be replaced or repaired, there may not be money to do so.
