134 Mph Speeder Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison
BENSON, Minn. (KSAX) - An Appleton man who lead police on a high speed chase of up to 134 miles per hour in July, was sentenced Tuesday.
Twenty-three-year-old David Fust was sentenced to five years and seven months in prison after he pleaded guilty to stealing guns and fleeing police in Oct.
Fust was ticketed for driving 134 miles per hour in 55 mile per hour zone, but police said for pursuing officers, catching up wasn't easy.
"We clocked the vehicle at approximately 134 miles an hour. (Officer Nancy Dosdall) turned her red lights and siren on after that in an attempt to pursue the vehicle, but due to the fact that they were coming into the city of Benson, at such a high rate of speed, she decided to terminate the pursuit for safety reasons," Benson Police Chief Mike Jambor said.
Shortly after the 1990 Nissan sped off, it was spotted, stuck, on the railroad tracks west of Benson after a fire alarm was set off at a nearby recycling center.
"Once they crashed, they had left that site and broke into the recycling center and stole a truck from there," Jambor said.
After running the car's license plates and locating the truck in Montevideo, Fust was found and arrested. Charges of theft, speeding and driving with a revoked license were dropped as part of his plea agreement.
"People don't realize that when you're going that fast, it takes you a lot longer to stop. People don't train at driving 134 miles an hour. So, when they get put in that situation, inexperience really has a tendency to show, and can lead to a crash, as it did."
Fust must spend three years and nine months in prison before he's eligible for parole. He also faces burglary charges in Lac Qui Parle County.
A Morris man was also ticketed going 118 miles per hour on Stevens County Road 6 that same day, but was not arrested.
