Bemidji Armed Robbery Suspect on the Loose after Escape from Custody

BEMIDJI, Minn. (KSAX) - A manhunt is underway after an armed robbery suspect escaped in Bemidji.

Authorities said they were taking 21-year-old Jason Lee King, of Redby, from the Beltrami County Jail, to an appointment at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center when he escaped at 12:55 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said King ran, and they followed his footprints in the snow to a home where King stole a vehicle that was parked there, with a neighbor spotting a red truck, leaving the home.

After calling other local agencies, a Red Lake Police officer saw the truck and tried to pull King over, authorities said.

The truck sped off through Red Lake and Redby reaching speeds of 90 miles per hour, running cars off the road.

King finally crashed and fled on foot, into the woods, police said.

As of Tuesday night, King is still on the loose.

He was in custody, charged with armed robbery at Newby's Store in Bemidji, back in December.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office at (218) 333-9111.
