2009 Jefferson Award Nominee: Jim Schoeberl - Alexandria

Since his retirement in 1996, Jim Schoeberl has made numerous contributions to his community.  His days of volunteering started at the food shelf.  Not long after, he heard the Douglas County Habitat for Humanity needed help with a housing project.  Jim quickly found himself a lead person on the building projects.  He now serves as site manager with the organization and a project coordinator for all aspects of the Habitat for Humanity homes, including site preparation, construction planning, coordinating ordering and delivering of the building materials and managing a volunteer crew.

Between stocking shelves and pounding nails, Jim also finds time to immerse himself in “Kids Against Hunger”.  Almost single handedly, Jim brought together over 200 Alexandria volunteers who in one day packaged and packed over 60,000 meals to feed the hungry.

Two years ago,
Jim heard about another program called “Lets Go Fishing,” which gives the elderly a chance to enjoy a day on the lake fishing or sight seeing.  Jim made the rounds locally describing the program with the hope of creating an Alexandria chapter, complete with a pontoon, equipment and volunteers.  Two years ago, the chapter began and thanks to Jim, 800 people were able to go out fishing and boating for free.

In addition to the above programs, Jim has been heavily involved with the
United Way.  He has pitched in to help with Chili cook-offs, Allocations, and Golf Classics.

Jim
’s church and his town of Forada have also benefited greatly from his contributions.  One person says, “When I think of Jim Schoeberl, the word that comes to mind immediately is ‘good’. Jim is just a good person to the core.”
