2009 Jefferson Award Nominee - Nancy Adams

It has been said that Nancy Adams has been a shot in the arm for Pequot Lakes, Minnesota.

Nancy and her husband Tom retired to
Pequot Lakes from Chicago where Nancy was an Education Coordinator for schools in Chicago. When they arrived, they found that a group of citizens had wanted a library for their community and these folks were able to get people interested and raised some funds. Then Nancy came on board as volunteer coordinator and things started to happen.

Nancy put together a volunteer base to raise funds, get donations of books, grants, furniture, computers with DSL, do manual labor and everything needed to produce a first class library. The Pequot Lakes Library has been opened for some time now and is being thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who steps through its doors. At the start there were 16,000 entries in the library, children’s books, resource materials, fiction, non-fiction, three computers for the public to use and two computers in the children’s library with educational games, and all of this was accomplished without using taxpayer’s money. At the time, Pequot Lakes was a small community of 1900, so this was especially important. Of course as with any town, it grows and the library has already outgrown its present location. Nancy is now working with architects to design a new structure along with coordinating ways to raise the funds necessary without using taxpayer’s money again!

Nancy also writes a cooking column for the newspaper and is very involved with the Soup Kitchen and Meals on Wheels.

Nancy & Tom volunteer at their church for “Parents Night Out” which is an opportunity for parents to have a night out and their children are taken care of by Nancy and Tom at no expense.

She is always looking for volunteers, book programs and money to make the Pequot Lakes Library better. If it weren’t for
Nancy, Pequot Lakes may not have a library at all.

The previous Mayor of Pequot Lakes, Cathy Malecha said, “
Nancy is one of those people who can do anything and do it well. She is a spark in our community and knows how to accomplish projects given to her and also uses her time to help others in her community and church.”

And it should come as no surprise;
Nancy is now the mayor of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota.
